Discharge Instructions
The patient was discharged and allowed to return home on Friday 17 September 2010. The owner received a written copy and oral information of the discharge summary which outlined the various aftercare instructions which were to be followed in order for Tessa to make the best possible recovery (see appendix). The discharge summary informed the owner that a bandage is placed over the surgical site to protect the incision site. The owner was also encouraged to limit Tessa’s exercise over the next 4 weeks and that she should only be going for short walks in order to relieve herself. It was also noted that the bandage will need to be left in place until the sutures are removed. If the bandage is wet or there is an odour coming from it, it should be checked and changed. The owner was also informed about the medications that are required and if she had any concerns or questions that she could call anytime on (09)845 5455 before 6pm and (09) 849 2121 after 6pm.

Follow up
Tessa’s owner was informed that she would need to bring Tessa in for some follow up care during her recovery. She was informed that in 14 days from the surgery date (Monday 27 September 2010), Tessa would need to come in to the clinic to have her sutures removed and also that she would need to come in for a bandage change next Thursday or Friday (23 or 24 September 2010). This time would also be used to check the progress of her recovery and ensure that the owner does not have any further queries or concerns that needed to be addressed.
